First aired on August 19, 2019, Prima Donnas stars Jillian Ward, Althea Ablan & Sofia Pablo as triplets facing challenges involving family secrets, grudging relatives, and an endless pursuit of real identity. This marks the first time for Althea and Sofia to bag leading roles.

When it first premiered, its rival Kadenang Ginto was the highest rating daytime series. Despite performing well with an average of 6-7% (based on AGB Nielsen NUTAM), Prima Donnas was still 2-3% short of the rival. By the time Kadenang Ginto lost steam in the middle of October 2019, the series started pushing the former to the limit. sirmac's avatarMC's Corner

2020 is coming to a close. But before we bid goodbye to this year, here is a look back at what happened in the world of Philippine Radio. Previously, we traveled back to 2010. For this part, we will discuss the Top 10 radio-related events in the country.

1. Radio in Pandemic

When ECQ was implemented at the middle of March, a lot of stations had to reduce its broadcast hours. A handful of stations went off the air in the middle of the pandemic, such as 103.5 K-Lite, and are yet to announce if they’ll go back on air this coming new year. Even jocks and personalities took a break from radio until places were downgraded to GCQ status. Some of them resorted to a work from home mode.

2. ABSCBN’s Post-radio Era

On the evening of May 5, ABSCBN’s Radyo Patrol and My Only Radio stations went off…

Win Radio @ 10

sirmac's avatarMC's Corner

10 years ago today, another masa station was launched at the start of the decade with 107.5 Win Radio. Believe me or not, Win is pronounced NU backwards.

THE END OF THE LEGEND

By early October 2010, news broke out that NU 107 would change formats the following month. The reason behind it was that the station needs to earn more money. It was later confirmed at the final NU Rock Awards.

Upon NU 107’s final broadcast on November 7, it was revealed that Manny Luzon, through ZimZam Management, took over the station’s operations. Luzon stated that one “can’t serve one menu all day”.

Luzon used to work with DZMB, which later on became Love Radio. He later on set up Energy FM under UBSI in the mid 90s and was head of the radio network until he left in early 2010.

A WINNER WAS BORN

On November 9…

Radyo5’s 10th Anniversary (News5)

10 years ago today, around 8 months after TV5’s relaunch, Radyo5 92.3 News FM was launched under TV5’s News5 department. And it has gone through a lot of changes throughout its run.

U92’S DEMISE

By late August 2010, news broke that U92 would end soon and TV5 would take over the station. On October 1, U92’s 1st anniversary, the station switched to automated music, airing oldies music along with a stinger voiced by Martin Andanar. (I can’t remember what he said.)

LAUNCH TIME

On November 8 at 4am, Radyo5 was officially launched. Andanar first went on air with his program Andar Ng Mga Balita. Aside from that, its initial Weekday line-up consisted of:

  • 5am: Balita Alas Singko sa Radyo5
  • 5:30am: Hook-up of TV5’s Good Morning Club
  • 8am: Punto Asintado, hosted by Cheryl Cosim and Erwin Tulfo
  • 10am: Isyu, hosted by Raffy Tulfo and Nina Taduran…

Rated K Moves To TV5

sirmac's avatarMC's Corner

After former ABSCBN News talent Ted Failon’s move to TV5 via Radyo5 last month, Kornia Sanchez follows suit through Brightlight Productions. She also brought her program Rated K along with her.

Rated K started on May 2004 and, months later, found itself going head-to-head with GMA’s Kapuso Mo Jessica Soho for years. After it waved the white flag on the latter, it was moved on an earlier timeslot. After ABSCBN was denied a franchise, the show became one of the casualties of the network, with Korina moving it online and bringing her staff along with her.

Rated K is now Rated Korina and is co-produced with Brightlight Productions. It will still deliver the same worthy stories like before. Another chapter awaits this long running news magazine show come Saturday afternoon.
